About the museum
The hôtel d'Ansembourg is a townhouse built around 1740 for a banker, on the bank of the Meuse, in the Féronstrée. Its architecture and decoration illustrate the refined art of living of the Liège bourgeoisie of the period.
The City of Liège acquired the building in 1903, and in 1905 it became its archaeology and decorative arts museum. The Institut archéologique liégeois provides its scientific direction. Listed as an exceptional immovable heritage site of the Walloon Region since 2009, the townhouse has kept many original decorations: carved panelling, wrought ironwork, stucco and paintings.
The rooms present art objects and Liège and European furniture that recreate interiors of the period, with tapestries, Cordoba-style leather hangings, Venetian-style glass chandeliers, clocks and ceramics. The 18th-century Liège furniture is particularly prized. The museum is closed until further notice due to works: a first phase of restoration of the building envelope (roof, framework, masonry, ironwork, joinery) is under way.
