About the museum
The museum is housed in 't Mieleke, an undershot water grain mill that the municipality had built upstream of the Oude Molen (Old Mill) in 1717. For that reason the mill is also called the Nieuwe Molen (New Mill). The building was lived in until 1956. In 1987 it was made available to the local history and cultural association Sint-Aldegondiskring, which set up its museum there.
The collection is very varied. It includes archaeological finds from the region, objects from the miller's life, tools, household items and everyday objects from the past, but also devotional objects, traditional costume, musical instruments and toys. As a rarity, porcelain cannonballs from the Napoleonic era are on display.
As well as the permanent collection, temporary art exhibitions are regularly held in the mill. The small park that connects the mill with the miller's house is a pleasant spot for a picnic by the water.
