About the museum
The Heemkundige Kring Wissekerke (local history society) researches and brings to life the history of the lordship of Wissekerke, to which the villages of Bazel, Kruibeke, Rupelmonde and Steendorp belong. The society has existed for more than fifty years and explores the everyday life of former and current residents, with attention to crafts, stories, traditions and monuments.
The local history museum in Bazel shows hundreds of old everyday objects that members and residents have donated over the years. Some of the objects are kept in storage for future exhibitions or for articles in the journal. The museum also houses a nostalgic shop from the 1940-1950 period and a cosy brown café.
The society also has a photo archive, a documents archive, a library and a death-notice archive with almost 20,000 memorial cards and obituaries. Each year it organises four to five exhibitions and publishes a journal four times a year. Archive and library can be consulted by members by appointment.
