About the museum

Herman Teirlinck had his house built on the Uwenberg, on the edge of the village of Beersel, on a spot he had chosen with care. His friend Henry Van de Velde advised on the house and its interior. Teirlinck lived there from 1936 until his death in 1967, and wrote there some of the finest work ever published about the region between the Zenne and the Zoniën. In this way he immortalised the southernmost strip of Flanders in Dutch literature.

After his death the family rented the house out for some time. From 1979 it belonged to the municipality of Beersel, which ran it as a museum. The house and garden were protected in 2014. In 2017 the municipality sold it to culture enthusiast Gino Coorevits, who leased it to the newly founded non-profit association (vzw) Het Huis van Herman Teirlinck, with architect Carlos Rabaut responsible for the restoration.

Since then the house has been a meeting place for writers, artists and readers, with a cultural programme, residencies for artists and above all for writers from Belgium and abroad, and an oasis of calm along the walking and cycling routes nearby. The house is surrounded by a romantic garden with Teirlinck's writers' terrace and overlooks the Zenne valley that he loved so much.
