About the museum

The Huis van Oscar in Lier was the home of artist Oscar Van Rompay (1899-1997) and his wife Jeanne van der Wee (1904-1981). The neoclassical house, dating from the early nineteenth century, is today a house museum: Oscar’s work is preserved and displayed here in its original context. The collection numbers more than five hundred paintings and over a thousand drawings. The museum is a private initiative and is run by the vzw Oscar Van Rompay. The site presents it as an artist’s home with a soul.

During a visit you walk through the ground floor, the first floor and the garden. The garden is a rare nineteenth-century town garden, partly ornamental and partly a fruit and vegetable garden, and is called the Garden of Jeanne & Oscar. With some group packages a closing drink is served in the Museumcafé Jeanne & Oscar. For those who book a night tour, part of the visit moves to the second floor, the Timmermanskamer (carpenter’s room), the library, the storerooms and the nineteenth-century kitchen.

The house also organises temporary exhibitions, cultural activities and practical lessons on pruning grapevines. Individual visitors can only come on fixed open days; groups visit with a guide by appointment during the tourist season.
