About the museum
The Nys-Vermoote cottage is a small fishing house on the Tulpenlaan in Koksijde, just behind the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Duinenkerk (Church of Our Lady in the Dunes). Carol Nys built it between 1855 and 1865; since 2001 it has been protected as a monument. The original residents, Carolus Nys and Isidoor Vermoote, were fishermen and also the grandfather and uncle of comic artist Jef Nys, the creator of Jommeke.
Jef Nys came here on holiday as a boy, learned to fish here and saw at close quarters the hard work of a smallholder-fisherman. He even drew the cottage in the comic story De mandoline van Caroline, which was exceptional, as he almost never used existing locations. On 1 July 2011 the cottage opened as a small museum about the history of Koksijde.
In the museum, Jommeke and Flip guide you through the history of Koksijde, from farming and fishing village to tourist seaside resort. For children there are various treasure hunts.
