About the museum

The Paul Delvaux Museum is located in Sint-Idesbald, a district of Koksijde. The painter Paul Delvaux discovered the village in 1945 and regarded it as a pleasant and inspiring place to stay. In 1979 the Stichting Paul Delvaux was established, which looks after the artist’s interests. Delvaux bequeathed to it his art collection, his archive and the management of his copyrights.

In 1982 Charles Van Deun, in consultation with Delvaux, bought the Vlierhof to house a museum. In this way the museum in Sint-Idesbald came into being, under the auspices of the foundation. On more than 1,000 square metres it shows the largest collection in the world of the artist’s work, with paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks and etchings.

The museum chooses a new theme for an exhibition every year. In the past, for example, the relationship with the sculptor George Grard and the frescoes for the Brussels house Périer were central. Concerts, guided tours and family activities are also part of the programme.

Today the museum forms part of the cultural life of the municipality of Koksijde, together with the NAVIGO Museum, the Abdijmuseum Ten Duinen and the Kunstencentrum Ten Bogaerde.
