About the museum
The IKOB goes back to an idea of the artist and art teacher Francis Feidler. It was to be a centre for cross-border exhibitions, from which a collection would gradually emerge through purchases, loans and, above all, donations from the artists involved. The first milestones were the sculpture exhibition “Kontakt 93” in Eupen's parks and the project “Volle Scheunen”, implemented in 1997 together with the former Documenta director Manfred Schneckenburger.
In 1999 the IKOB moved into permanent premises in a commercially used building near the old slaughterhouse in Eupen. In 2005 the collection was officially recognised, and the Internationales Kunstzentrum Ostbelgien became the IKOB – Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst. The collection now comprises almost 400 works by artists from Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg and Germany.
The house sees itself as a platform for exchange with its visitors and uses its border location as the starting point for its programme. It shows three to four major temporary exhibitions per year, accompanied by individual presentations from the collection. In addition there are video art in the Black Box, events and educational programmes for children, young people and schools.
