About the museum
Haus Ternell, a regional centre for environmental education and sustainability, lies in the middle of the Hertogenwald near Eupen, close to the Wesertalsperre and the Hohes Venn, Belgium's largest nature reserve. It is run by the DGG Gemeinschaftszentren and offers nature guided tours, children's activities, school programmes, training courses and a nature camp operation.
In the small museum of the house, visitors encounter deer, badger, wild boar and other forest and Venn dwellers, as well as the black grouse, the emblem of the Hohes Venn. There are also typical Venn plants, a cross-section of peat and the most common edible and poisonous mushrooms of the area. A film of about half an hour on the restoration of the Hohes Venn complements the visit, and all explanations are written in German, French, Dutch and English.
The grounds also include a herb garden, a near-natural adventure playground, the Werner-Thoma-Hütte and seminar rooms; the house is also a tourist information office and the starting point for many hikes, and in winter for cross-country ski trails.
