About the museum

The name Z33 refers to Zuivelmarkt 33, the address of the former beguinage of Hasselt. Since 1938 the site has had a cultural function, first with the Provincial Museum and the Centre for Arts-Beguinage. In 1996 both institutions merged into the Provincial Centre for Visual Arts, from which Z33, House for Contemporary Art, emerged in 2002.

The house brought contemporary art and design together in thematic projects, first in the beguine houses and in exhibition wing 58. It also organised art projects in the open landscape of Limburg, including in the area of Borgloon and Heers and between Hasselt and Genk. Since 2018, Z33 has also taken on the tasks of the Cultuurplatform Design.

In 2020 a new chapter began: Z33 has since called itself House for Contemporary Art, Design & Architecture and moved to Bonnefantenstraat 1. There the Italian architect Francesca Torzo designed the new exhibition wing, Wing 19, with an exterior of rhombus-shaped bricks that connects to Wing 58 and the renovated beguinage. The building won, among other awards, the Piranesi Award (2018) and the Italian Architecture Prize (2020). Z33 has no permanent collection: the programme consists of changing exhibitions on social themes.
