About the museum
Landbouwmuseum De Nostalgie is a local history museum in Uikhoven, a sub-municipality of Maasmechelen. It was founded by Ivo Smeets, a resident of Maasmechelen and a former carnival participant. He was inspired by a Heimat museum in Austria and built a museum in his own surroundings. In 2026 the museum celebrated its fifteenth anniversary.
The collection shows farm life in the Maasland of the past. You see agricultural machines and tractors, overalls, old firefighters' suits and helmets, and a model of a church. Part of the spare parts, which previously stood in a café in Herbricht (Lanaken), was lost in the last flood of the Meuse.
The museum is a private initiative. According to reports from April 2026, the municipality of Maasmechelen is looking into how it could take over the running of the museum later, when the founder stops; no decision has been taken yet.
