About the museum

The museum pharmacy is housed in part of a late-Classical building from 1820 on the west side of the Groenplaats in Oud-Rekem. The collection comes from the Humblé family pharmacy, to which a doctor’s practice was connected from 1891. Doctor Gerard Humblé initially ran both from the house De Roomse Keizer on the Herenstraat; his son Frans continued the practice until 1970.

In 1985 the widow donated the collection. In 2009 it was put on display in the museum. Herbs, oils, jars, pipettes and pill rollers can be seen on the shelves. In the doctor’s study stand, among other things, a birthing chair, obstetric forceps and equipment for post-mortem examinations. A dentist’s chair, a counter with a lectern and many medical books also belong to the collection.

The museum shows how doctors and pharmacists worked in the nineteenth century. You can only visit with a guide: for groups by appointment, and on the open Sundays.
