About the museum
The distillery began in 1890, when the postmaster of Rekem, Franz Joseph Hubert Senden, started a liqueur distillery together with his partner Jean Joseph Eugène De Vel. In 1891 Senden had the combined residence and distillery building constructed; in 1910 the distillery was expanded. In 1921 his son Henri took over the business. In 1954 the distillery stopped and the machines were largely sold.
In 1971 Jos Senden, a son of Henri, bought the distillery back and systematically recovered the machines that had been sold. In 2005 the distillery reopened as a museum. The building consists of a broad house in eclectic style with the distillery beside it under a mansard roof. The interior from the 1920s and 1930s has been almost completely preserved, with an eighteenth-century wooden press and an intact archive.
Well-known products were the jenever Voske and 't Zwart Stoopke. You visit the distillery with a guide, who explains the craft of distilling; there is also a tasting.
