About the museum

In 1869 Ivo-Jacob Wostyn began producing Mostaard Wostyn in Torhout. Today his great-grandson Piet Wostyn runs the company. At the end of 2003 he opened a mustard museum on the Conscienceplein; a year later it moved to the larger site at Oude Gentweg 63.

The museum displays a collection of mustard pots, advertising signs and other curiosities from Belgian and foreign mustard makers. Part of it comes from the collection of Roger Cauwe from Stasegem.

The highlight is the old mustard mill of the Carbon family from Roeselare, which made mustard until the 1980s. Their other tools are also on display. The museum can only be visited by appointment: during the guided tour you discover how Torhout regional mustard is made, and you taste the mustard.
