About the museum
Hunnegem is a district of Geraardsbergen on the left bank of the Dender. In 1068 Count Baldwin VI of Flanders bought land here from the lord of Hunnegem to build a castle, which became the legal birthplace of the town. The Romanesque chapel of Hunnegem, dedicated to Our Lady, has been a place of pilgrimage since the fourteenth century.
In the buildings of the former priory of Hunnegem a museum site has been set up, managed by the Vrienden van Musea Hunnegem (Friends of Musea Hunnegem). The Museum Hunnegem (HUGE) tells the history of this historic heart of Geraardsbergen and uses, among other things, the well-preserved Romanesque church for this purpose.
On the first floor of the priory, the mavf, Museum en Archief van de Vlaamse Film, in cooperation with the Vlaams Filmarchief, shows the development of film in Flanders from the first silent film in 1920 to the early 1960s. There is also a section on the air war in the Second World War (Wings of Memory) with a memorial for 22 May 1944, a Comic Corner on the Belgian comic strip and, each season, an exhibition by the photo club FOCUS Geraardsbergen.
