About the museum
The museum grew out of “Art en Marge”, a project launched in 1983 in the wake of the Surrealist movement, which became a non-profit association and research and dissemination centre in 1984. After stages on rue des Vierges (1986) and rue des Alexiens (1992), the association moved to rue Haute in 2001.
In 2009 the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles recognised the institution as a museum under the name Art et marges musée. Its missions are conservation, dissemination, education and research.
The collections, begun in the mid-1980s with self-taught artists and workshops for people with intellectual disabilities or psychological fragility, now comprise more than 4,500 international works by some 200 artists. One floor is devoted to the permanent collection, with groupings by artist and recent acquisitions; the temporary exhibitions bring together creators working on both sides of the margins of art.
