About the museum
The Maison Camille Lemonnier, on the chaussée de Wavre in Ixelles, was built in 1889 by Baron Oscar Jolly. The municipality of Ixelles acquired it in 1924 and, in 1946, placed it at the disposal of the Association des écrivains belges de langue française, which has its headquarters there. It now belongs to the French Community.
The writer’s daughter, Marie Lemonnier, then entrusted the association with the management and conservation of her father’s collections, grouped on the first floor under the name Musée Camille Lemonnier. Since 1997 it has been a museum in its own right, affiliated to the Brussels Museums Council.
The museum includes the writer’s study, reconstructed by his daughter as it was at the author’s death in his house on the rue du Lac, with books, letters and dictionaries. An adjoining room brings together works of art that belonged to Camille Lemonnier: portraits by Émile Claus and Van Strijdonck, busts by Jef Lambeaux, a work by Auguste Rodin and paintings by painters of his time. Display cases show autographs, rare editions and translations, and a documentation room gathers works devoted to the writer.
