About the museum

The museum occupies the monumental studio that the painter, sculptor and writer Antoine Wiertz (1806–1865), one of the most controversial Belgian Romantic artists, had built from 1850 under an agreement with the Belgian State. After his death, all the works in the studio were bequeathed to the State, and since 1868 the museum has been attached to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.

Wiertz loved excess: his gigantic canvases, inspired by masters such as Rubens, Michelangelo and Raphael, sit alongside numerous sketches. Among his works, “Les Grecs et les Troyens se disputant le corps de Patrocle” is more than eight metres long, while “L’inhumation précipitée” and “Deux jeunes filles (La belle Rosine)” reflect his taste for drama and death.

The museum has been closed to the public since 11 October 2024 for renovation of the entrance and the concierge’s lodge. Reopening was announced for 2026, with no precise date published so far.
