About the museum
The Musée d’Ixelles was founded by the municipal authorities and inaugurated in 1892 in the presence of the royal family. It all began with a donation in 1890: Eugénie and Henri De Pratere offered the municipality the collection of their brother Edmond De Pratere (1826–1888), an animal and landscape painter, on condition that it be kept in premises open to the public. A building became available, the municipal slaughterhouse, which became the first museum; a large hall was built at the rear for a retrospective and modern exhibition, and a function room was added in 1893.
The collection was then enriched by major gifts, such as those of the art dealer and critic Léon Gauchez in 1895 (old art and 19th-century art) and of Fritz Toussaint in 1906 (Belgian landscape painters, Courbet, David). It is today devoted mainly to Belgian art from the late 19th century to the present day, with old and modern European works as well.
The museum is currently closed to the public. It will celebrate its reopening during a festive weekend from 19 to 21 March 2027; opening hours, prices, ticketing and reopening exhibitions will be announced in the months leading up to it.
