About the museum
The museum was founded in 1838 from collections that existed before the creation of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Its first curator, Professor Louis Deroubaix (1813-1897), gave it his name. Over time the collections grew, notably under the impetus of renowned anatomists and embryologists such as Albert Dalcq and Albert Brachet.
The museum followed the moves of the Faculty of Medicine: rue des Sols, Parc Léopold, Porte de Hal and, today, the Erasme campus, next to the Erasme hospital. It is located in building G, on level 2.
The collections include very old wax and plaster models, modern plastinated preparations, specimens kept in alcohol, skeletons, anthropological casts and a large series of pathological bone specimens and prostheses. Display cases illustrate human development with normal or teratological foetal specimens, as well as dental anatomy. Virtual models of specimens studied by medical imaging are shown on screen. The museum mainly caters to medical students, but it is open to the general public on request, with a guided tour.
