About the museum
The museum occupies the birthplace of the composer André-Modeste Grétry (1741-1813), in the Outremeuse district of Liège. It is a small building in the Liège Louis XV style, extended by an annexe in the same style. The house belonged to the Dubois-Desoer family until 1859, when they gave it to the City of Liège. It has been restored to recover its former appearance and houses the Grétry collection assembled by Jean-Théodore Radoux, director of the Royal Conservatoire of Liège.
The museum was solemnly inaugurated on 13 July 1913, in the presence of King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth. The rooms have kept their original purpose and evoke the great moments of the musician’s life. More than a hundred likenesses show Grétry at every age: paintings, drawings, busts, statuettes, medallions and miniatures. Period instruments, including a fortepiano, violins and a serpent, complete the route, and the second floor houses a library of scores, books and autograph letters.
Closed from 2011 to March 2013 for major renovations, the museum has reopened. It notably holds the painting “L’Apothéose de Grétry” by Joseph Dreppe, on deposit from the King Baudouin Foundation.
