About the museum
The Musée de la Hesbaye grew out of an association whose activity began in 1960 to save from oblivion and destruction the objects and documents that bear witness to life in Hesbaye. It is run and staffed exclusively by volunteers, and is recognised and supported by the province of Liège.
The museum is housed in the centre of Remicourt, near Waremme, in a municipal building dating from 1877 that formerly housed the town hall, the schools and the schoolmaster's house. Nine rooms have been fitted out, with a free-access garden at the back and a picnic area among fruit trees of old varieties.
The route includes archaeology (flint, Celtic and Gallo-Roman objects, a model of a motte castle), the development of the villages, sugar in Hesbaye, old furniture, the school of the past and the room devoted to Mélotte, the company of Jules Mélotte, who invented the suspended-bowl cream separator in 1888. The museum also evokes the Second World War in Hesbaye (mobilisation, Resistance, liberation), a Messerschmitt 110 engine dug up in 1995 and a vaulted cellar that served as a shelter.
