About the museum
Fort de Hollogne is one of the twelve forts of the Liège fortified position, conceived by the military engineer Henri Alexis Brialmont. It was built between 1888 and 1892 in unreinforced concrete, a material that was new at the time. Triangular in plan, it is surrounded by a deep moat of about six metres. Its main armament, a 210 mm howitzer and several 150 mm and 120 mm guns, was concentrated in the turrets of the central massif.
In August 1914 the garrison, numbering about 350 men, endured a very violent bombardment. After the fall of Loncin fort, it surrendered on 16 August: Hollogne was the last Liège fort to fall. Between the wars the Belgian army used it as a munitions depot without modernising it. In May 1940 dive bombers attacked it; at the Liberation in 1944, American troops set up a hospital there.
After the war the fort remained a military depot and then a command post of the Belgian air force, until 1991. Transferred in 1997 to the Walloon authorities responsible for transport, it now lies next to Liège Airport. The Comité de sauvegarde du patrimoine historique du fort de Hollogne maintains it, organises visits and hosts commemorative ceremonies and exhibitions.
