About the museum
Hesbaye is one of the oldest regions in Europe. From the Palaeolithic onwards, several sites were occupied by hunter-gatherer-fishers; between 5,300 and 4,800 BCE the Neolithic brought agriculture and livestock farming with peoples who had come from Central Europe. Hesbaye has yielded more than 150 sites of this so-called Omalian civilisation, named after the village of Omal, mainly around the Yerne (Verlaine, Chapon-Seraing, Seraing-le-Château, Haneffe, Limont).
The museum in Saint-Georges-sur-Meuse evokes this long history through many objects found on some of the 600 sites discovered in the region. Created on the initiative of the municipal administration, it presents the collections of Guy Destexhe and of the Société archéologique de Hesbaye, which lead to the beginnings of regional and European history. It is open by appointment only.
