About the museum

The museum is devoted to the history of the various Belgian police services since the end of the Ancien Régime. Since 2006 it has been housed in a former barracks in Etterbeek, in the heart of the federal police barracks district.

Part of the collection comes from an exhibition on the history of the gendarmerie held at Brussels City Hall in 1968, which led to the creation of a centre for the history and traditions of the gendarmerie. The other major ensemble, devoted to the judicial police, comes from the “Musée du Crime” (Crime Museum), an educational museum that has been housed in the Palace of Justice in Brussels since 1925 and whose collections were acquired in 2006.

The route presents uniforms, decorations, weapons, vehicles and photographs of the gendarmerie, the judicial police, the former municipal police, the Civic Guard and the military police. The permanent display has been entirely renewed in recent years, and thematic exhibitions have been designed, for example on counterfeiting and on animal welfare. Since 2014 the museum has operated as an ASBL (non-profit association). A documentation centre offers information on the history of the brigades, on the life of the gendarme and on the functioning of the many police services over time.
