About the museum
The Montauban site, a natural spur near Buzenol, served as a refuge from the Iron Age onwards. Most of the remains visible today are more recent: carved blocks from the Gallo-Roman period, probably from funerary monuments along the Roman roads, were reused in the medieval fortifications built on the hill, where a keep was also erected. Known since the 17th century, the site has yielded many blocks from the woods below.
In the 1950s it was decided to build a museum on site to house these finds. The Belgian-Polish architect Constantin Brodzki designed a museum to stand in the middle of the forest without supervision, equipment or maintenance: a semi-underground module of four glazed cubic cells placed side by side, oriented into the hillside, whose double walls ensure permanent ventilation. This site museum, sober and functional, has become a witness to contemporary architecture.
The stone museum is an annex of the Musée gaumais in Virton. The famous relief of the Treveri harvester, found at Montauban, is kept in Virton. Below, the restored 16th-century forges and mill house the Centre d’art contemporain du Luxembourg belge.
