About the museum
The museum is housed in Musson, on the former site of the steelworks, in a building larger than the premises first lent by a private individual in Halanzy, where the collection began. It opened to visitors in 2022, after several years of fitting out. It is run by a volunteer association that wants to preserve the mining and steel-making past of Halanzy and Musson.
The oolitic iron ore deposit, the “minette”, was discovered in the 18th century; in the Middle Ages it was already scraped from the surface. It contained about 38 to 40% iron. The Musson mine, initially a horizontal gallery running through the hillside, ceased extraction in 1963, when the seam had become too thin and the timbering too costly.
The route presents the tools, equipment and daily life of miners and blast-furnace workers. The displays and the audio guide are available in French, English and Dutch. The building also houses a 250 m² multi-purpose space for activities and temporary exhibitions.
