About the museum
The museum occupies the house-studio that Constantin Meunier (1831-1905), painter, sculptor and draughtsman, had built at the end of his life in Ixelles. The house held a collection of more than 700 works; it was acquired by the state in 1936 and opened to the public in 1939. Attached to the Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, it was later renovated and since 1986 has presented a selection of around 150 works and documents.
The display traces the artist's development, especially between 1875 and 1905, a period Meunier called his “second life”. His realist talent then focused more on the social and industrial aspects of Belgium, first through painting and drawing and then, from 1885 onwards, through his return to sculpture, which made him one of the great creators of the genre.
Paintings such as Le creuset brisé are matched by sculptures such as Le marteleur: a whole people in plaster and bronze that marked its era and long influenced the realist art of the early 20th century.
