About the museum
Museum aan de Grens, known as Het Kaske, is the local history museum of the Heemkunde- en Erfgoedvereniging Nicolaus Poppelius vzw in Poppel, a sub-municipality of Ravels on the Dutch border. The museum opened in 1995 in the former storage building of the protected windmill in Weelde. It soon became too small there, and the municipality of Ravels offered the former town hall of Poppel as a new home.
Around thirty volunteers renovated the building over two years under the direction of interior architect Liesbeth Paulussen. On 7 December 2007 the museum reopened its doors there.
The collection tells the story of the history, culture, folklore and everyday life of earlier generations. Themes include archaeology, clothing, education, crafts, agriculture, the army and wars, the border and smuggling, photography, devotional prints, popular devotion, local government and associations. The museum also has a library and an archive.
