About the museum

The shipping company Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd linked the Netherlands with the Dutch East Indies for more than a century. In 2005, Ed van Lierde, a former seaman with the Lloyd fleet, decided to found a museum of his own for its history after a disappointing visit to the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam. At Pentecost 2006, the Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd Museum opened in a small building in Oudehorne in Friesland, run by a foundation from 2010. From 2012 to 2014, the permanent exhibition was shown at the historic shipyard “Rotterdams Welvaren” in Rotterdam's Lloyd quarter.

After the founder withdrew from the board at the end of 2018, the museum was wound up in the course of 2019. From mid-2019, Van Lierde built the Lloyd Atelier in his new home town of Netersel in North Brabant, in three construction phases until the end of 2021. Since the official opening in the summer of 2022, it has housed a small, permanent exhibition; since May 2023, the foundation Stichting Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd Heritage has stood behind it.

On display are, among other things, ship models (including the Sibajak and the Slamat), ship bells, mementos from the Rotterdamsche Lloyd up to 1947 and from the Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd from 1947 to 1970, as well as a library. Nearby stands the Slamat Monument, which commemorates the 983 victims of the ship's sinking during the Second World War.
