About the museum
Sculptor Herman De Cuyper (1904–1992) was born in Blaasveld and trained at the academy in Mechelen. In 1938, thanks to the patronage of Elsa Gevaert, he settled in his newly built studio house on the Mechelsesteenweg. He lived there with his family, between the kitchen garden and the orchard, and in the 1930s he grew into a representative of the animists, the generation of 1900.
Towards the end of the Second World War a V1 bomb destroyed part of his plaster models, but a representative set of sculptures in plaster, stone and wood survived. Around 1974 his daughter Celestina set out to make the extensive oeuvre publicly accessible. In four years, the artist and his children built a museum building of 400 square metres themselves, next to the house.
Since 1984, the year of De Cuyper's eightieth birthday, the museum has been permanently open. The family heritage unit keeps several hundred sculptures, paintings and drawings. The museum also includes the artist's original studio house.
