About the museum
Museum Rupelklei in Rumst tells the story of clay in the Rupel region. In the 1970s numerous local companies disappeared, and this made people realise that the memory of the region had to be preserved. That awareness led to the founding of the museum, which is run by a board with a chairman, a treasurer and a secretary. A circle of friends, the Vrienden van Museum Rupelklei, supports the museum.
The museum revolves around clay and brick, but also explains the geology of the region, Roman history and the industrial heritage, including windmills, toll houses and brickworks. In addition, social history is covered, for example child labour and working conditions at the end of the nineteenth century. Visitors can choose themes according to their interests.
The museum is located in Terhagen, right next to the towpath along the Rupel.
