Museum of Witchcraft

Museum in Bruges about witches, sorcerers and magic, from ancient Egypt to the witch craze and modern Wicca, with holograms and dolls.

Opening hoursAdmission €9

About the museum

The Museum of Witchcraft, in Dutch “Hekserijmuseum”, is located on the Wollestraat in the historic centre of Bruges, at the same location as the Foltermuseum De Oude Steen. The two museums share a combined ticket.

Witches, sorcerers and magic have fascinated people since the beginning of time. The museum follows this theme from the magicians of ancient Egypt to the witch craze in Europe and modern Wicca. It shows how witches changed from respected goddesses into victims of fear and persecution.

Holograms, lifelike dolls and artefacts provide a historical overview and show how different cultures have viewed witchcraft in the past and present. Special pieces include an original witches' scale from 1638 and a ducking stool, in which suspected women were dunked under water until they confessed to being a witch.
