About the museum
At the end of the 19th century, the town of Izegem had its own power station built to supply the town with electricity. Prince Albert came to inaugurate the station in 1901. The installation was expanded over the years.
In 1936, Stadselektriciteit Izegem (the municipal electricity company) installed its seventh and most powerful steam engine: a tandem compound of 1,650 hp and 110 tonnes, built by Carels & Vanden Kerchove in Ghent. The electrical parts came from ACEC. It is the largest preserved steam engine in Belgium and has been a protected monument since 1978.
The engine no longer generates electricity, but it can still run. A group of volunteers, the Stoomvrienden Izegem (Steam Friends Izegem), has maintained it for many years. The museum around the engine is accessible only by appointment and with a guide.
