About the museum
On Sint-Hubrechtsstraat in Roeselare stands a well-preserved German communications bunker, which during the Second World War served as a telephone exchange. Today it houses a multimedia exhibition on the liberation of the town.
On 7 September 1944, tanks of the 1st Polish Armoured Division rolled into Roeselare. The troops of General Stanisław Maczek drove out the German army, ending four years of occupation. A few weeks after D-Day, the division had advanced with the Allied army through northern France and liberated a whole series of towns in Flanders and the Netherlands, including Ypres, Tielt, Ghent, Sint-Niklaas and Breda.
The exhibition tells this story with photos, testimonies, authentic objects and video material. Several storylines are covered: the story of the bunker itself, the liberation of Roeselare and Flanders, the Polish armoured division and General Maczek, the local resistance including Simonne Brugghe, and the fate of the Polish soldiers after the war.
