About the museum
The museum is housed in a semi-detached house from 1925 in the garden suburb of Eisden. The house was built for workers at the coal mine and follows the English garden city model. After the mine closed in 1987, the house fell into disrepair. The municipality of Maasmechelen bought the house and had it restored with the Koning Boudewijnstichting (King Baudouin Foundation); in 1995 it opened as a museum.
The house is furnished as a working-class family lived there in the 1930s, with original furniture, wallpaper, a Leuven stove and a kitchen range that runs on coal or wood. Outside stand an underground coal wagon and a bicycle. In the other half of the semi-detached house you will find the museum Leren & Spelen, about how children learned and played in the past.
The museum is run on a voluntary basis by Stichting Erfgoed Eisden, which began in 1983 as a local history circle and has been a foundation since 1998. Volunteer guides, including former residents and former miners, talk about life in the mining area. In May 2026 the museum welcomed its 175,000th visitor.
