Senfmühle Monschau

Technical monument from 1882: historic mustard mill in Monschau, with tours of the production, a mustard shop and a restaurant.

Opening hoursAdmission €5 Restaurant

About the museum

The Senfmühle on the Laufenstraße in Monschau was built in 1882 and has been owned by the same family ever since. Today the fifth and sixth generations run the business. Between old millstones, the Monschau mustard, the "Moutarde de Montjoie", is still made by hand.

The mill is regarded as a technical monument. Originally a water wheel drove the plant; today it still runs via an old line shaft. Visitors can thus see a stage of industrial development, the path from the water wheel to the line shaft, and on a guided tour can follow how the mustard is made. Afterwards the different mustard varieties can be sampled.

The family was not always active only in the mustard trade. The company history also includes a factory for soft drinks with lemonade production and a beverage distribution business. Today the building, next to the mill, houses a mustard shop and the restaurant Schnabuleum, where a "Mühlenabend" (Mill Evening) with a tour takes place on Thursdays. The shop's range extends from classic mustards through specialty mustards to delicacies and spirits from the Eifel. The Senfmühle is also present at many markets in the region.
