About the museum
The Tour d'Eben-Ezer is a monument to peace, erected from 1950 onwards by Robert Garcet at Eben-Emael, in a former flint quarry. It is built entirely of flint stones from the Geer valley. Its seven levels open onto a platform whose corners are topped by four turrets with cherubs. The name “Eben-Ezer” recalls, in the Bible, the stone raised by Samuel to symbolise restored peace. Every year at the spring equinox, a banner bearing the inscription “… et l'on n'apprendra plus la guerre…” (“…and war will be learned no more…”) flies from the tower.
Robert Garcet, born in Ghlin in 1912, settled in the Geer valley at the age of 18, where he worked as a stonemason and later as a quarry operator. He unearthed many fossils, including a mosasaur, and remains of prehistoric humans. A conscientious objector, he devoted part of his life to pacifism. He laid the first stones of the tower in 1948 and died on 26 December 2001; the building, largely completed in 1963, remains a work in progress.
The museum, also called the musée du Silex, presents Garcet's work: writings, sculptures, discoveries and philosophy. The first level traces his life and thought in six sections (Aimer, Penser, Créer; Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité); the second level is the Chérubins room. Other spaces evoke the Thébah, a troglodyte city imagined on the basis of the discoveries in the Geer valley, and the history of the construction. An art fantastique centre, founded in 1999, promotes contemporary creation in the park.
