About the museum

The Gliptoteka was founded in 1937 under the name Gipsoteka (Plaster Cast Collection), with the aim of presenting plaster casts of the architectural sculpture of immovable monuments of Croatian cultural heritage. Its founder, Prof. Dr. Antun Bauer, moved it in 1940 to the premises of the former tannery, an industrial complex whose construction had begun in 1864 and which ceased operating in 1938 after a fire in 1926. From 1950 the Gliptoteka has been part of the Hrvatska akademija znanosti i umjetnosti (Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, HAZU), and after joining the Academy it received its present name.

Over time the holdings have been enriched with works of Croatian sculpture of the 19th and 20th centuries, so the museum now holds more than 11,000 objects: plaster casts of antique sculpture, casts of works by Juraj Matejev Dalmatinac, casts of stećci (medieval tombstones) and fragments of immovable monuments, copies of frescoes from the 11th to the 16th century, a collection of medals and plaques, and a study collection of drawings. In 2000 a Park skulptura (Sculpture Park) was laid out alongside the museum complex.

The Gliptoteka has more than 14,000 square metres of space and holds the largest collection of sculpture in Croatia, both plaster casts and original works. The museum is currently closed because its buildings are being renovated.
