About the museum
Atelijer Meštrović was the home and workplace of Ivan Meštrović (1883–1962), one of the most important Croatian and European sculptors of the 20th century. At the beginning of the 1920s, after training in Vienna and living in Paris, Rome, Cannes and London, and by then returned to his homeland as a recognised artist, Meštrović bought the complex in the Mletačka ulica in Zagreb and remodelled it. Architects Viktor Kovačić, Harold Bilinić and Drago Ibler helped him with the design. Meštrović lived and worked here until 1942, when he left Zagreb and Yugoslavia.
In 1952 he gave the Croatian people a large number of his works and this building, by deed of gift, and a museum was founded on that basis. Today the Atelijer Meštrović is part of the Muzej Ivana Meštrovića (Ivan Meštrović Museum), and the building is itself an exhibit: the entrance hall with a portico of Brač stone, the former studio as an exhibition space, a garden with sculptures, and the residential part with its preserved wooden staircase and coffered ceilings.
The permanent exhibition presents Meštrović’s sculptures and relief works in wood, stone, bronze and plaster, and drawings and prints from the first four decades of his work, from student pieces to works created just before he left Zagreb in 1942. Among them are the early Glava starca (Head of an Old Man), Laokoon mojih dana (Laocoon of My Days) and fragments of the Kosovski ciklus (Kosovo Cycle).
