About the museum
According to tradition, Trocnov is the birthplace of the Hussite commander Jan Žižka. In the 14th and 15th centuries two free farmsteads stood here: one belonged to Žižka's parents and the other to his uncles. Žižka inherited the family estate around 1378, but as early as April 1380 he sold it and offered his services to the king. The farmsteads were later destroyed in the Thirty Years' War, and on their site a larger farmyard was built, which was looked after by the Borovany monastery and later by the Schwarzenbergs.
In 1923 Trocnov passed into state ownership. The site was opened to the public in July 1960, after the reconstruction of Žižka's birthplace, when a thirteen-metre monument of white Liberec granite by sculptor Josef Malejovský was also erected there. Since 1978 Trocnov has been a national cultural monument. In 2011 the South Bohemian Region took over the site and entrusted it to the Jihočeské muzeum (South Bohemian Museum) in České Budějovice.
Since 2020 an archaeological open-air museum (archeoskanzen) has been built on the site, which, according to archaeological finds, shows what a high medieval village looked like. It consists of a landowner's farmstead and a rural settlement. In April 2026 a new Visitor and Education Centre was added, with an exhibition about Jan Žižka, and from September 2026 also a children's playground inspired by the Middle Ages.
