About the museum

The Chlupáčovo muzeum historie Země (Chlupáč Museum of Earth History) belongs to the Faculty of Science of Charles University and serves mainly for teaching and research in palaeontology and historical geology. The geological and palaeontological collections have been part of the faculty since its founding in 1920. For decades they were accessible only to staff, students and specialists, and their premises gradually fell into disrepair.

Between 2004 and 2007 the building was reconstructed, during which the exhibition area was separated from the storage area. The exhibition was installed in 2008, and the museum then decided to open it to the public too, although only to a limited extent. On that occasion it was named after the geologist and palaeontologist Prof. Ivo Chlupáč, who championed the restoration of the collections but did not live to see the reconstruction.

The permanent exhibition contains about a thousand exhibits: fossils, casts, models and pictorial material. The main axis consists of display cases arranged by periods of Earth’s development from the Precambrian to the Cenozoic, supplemented by cases with exceptionally well-preserved sites, dioramas and models of animals, and a case with a selection from the collection of Martin Souček. The centrepiece is a replica of the skeleton of the predatory dinosaur Carnotaurus with a saddle on its back. A separate gallery is reserved for temporary thematic exhibitions.
