About the museum
The Health Museum originated in 1934 as the Medical Museum, on the initiative of Professor František Šamberger. It was to collect and preserve the monuments of the Czech medical profession, and its first curator was the head of the library of the Medical House, Viktor Palivec. After the war and after 1948 the museum changed its curators and its seat several times, and its collections often suffered from the moves.
Only in 1997 did it find a home in the courtyard building of the National Medical Library on Sokolská Street. After a temporary move during the reconstruction of the neighbouring hotel, it returned after 2004 to the renovated building, which offered larger premises and better conditions for storing the collections and for the work of researchers.
The core of the collection consists of medical and surgical instruments from the 17th century to the present, especially the acological cabinet set up in 1809 by Professor Josef Antonín Oechy. The museum also keeps diagnostic and therapeutic devices from the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century, and about 800 coins, medals and plaques with medical themes. The museum also cooperates with other institutions on exhibitions.
