About the museum
Since its founding in 1932, the Antonín Dvořák Museum has been housed in the Baroque Amerika summer palace in Prague's New Town. The summer palace was built in the early 18th century by Count Jan Václav Michna of Vacínov to a design by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer; it is surrounded by a garden with statues from the workshop of Matyáš Bernard Braun. The first exhibition opened on 20 June 1932 and showed furniture from Dvořák's study and objects from his Prague flat.
Until 1956 the museum was run by an association for the erection of the Dvořák monument, after which it passed to state administration. The first permanent exhibition after the reconstruction of the building was ceremonially opened in the jubilee year 1961; a new exhibition, divided into a biographical and a composer section, was created in 1991. Since 1976 the museum has been part of the Museum of Czech Music at the National Museum.
After a partial reconstruction in 2012, the exhibition The Paths of Antonín Dvořák was created on the ground floor, and the first floor was adapted for regular concerts and an annual thematic exhibition. The museum preserves above all a unique collection of the composer's manuscripts and correspondence, a substantial part of his music archive and library, and rich press documentation.
