About the museum
Since 1998 the mining museum has been housed in a reconstructed former rectory from 1755, which stands beside the church on the east side of the square in Jiřetín pod Jedlovou. The permanent exhibitions are devoted to the origins of the village, which Jiří ze Schleinitz, owner of the nearby Tolštejn Castle, founded for miners in 1554, and to the mining of silver-bearing ores in the village and its surroundings.
The first written record of mining on the Tolštejn estate dates from 1474. Mainly silver-bearing galena and chalcopyrite were mined, but the yields were low and the last attempts at mining ended in 1910. The museum also includes the nearby St John the Evangelist adit, which was made accessible as early as 1935 and has been open to the public again since 1995, with a length of 320 metres.
According to the municipal information centre, the museum in the former rectory is closed for technical reasons.
