About the museum
The mill in Waltersdorf, at the foot of the Lausche, is one of the oldest buildings in the village. A wooden mill is already mentioned here around 1400; in the early 17th century a stone building was erected. Until 1805 the mills belonged to the council of the town of Zittau. Over the centuries the house served as a grain mill with a bakery, later as a grinding mill and sawmill; in 1920 a turbine replaced the waterwheel.
After the last miller was expropriated in 1947, the business continued as a municipal enterprise. In 1956 Alfred Jungmichel set up a local history room in the building, from which today's museum emerged. Since 1998 it has been run by the friends' association Volkskunde- und Mühlenmuseum Waltersdorf e. V., which looks after the collection, special exhibitions and small events.
The museum shows originally preserved mill rooms and tells the story of milling. Other areas are devoted to village history, the everyday life of weavers in the 19th century and the composer Friedrich Schneider, who was born in Waltersdorf.
