About the museum

The Galerie moderního umění was founded in 1953 as the Regional Gallery (Krajská galerie). It was first housed in the chateau in Rychnov nad Kněžnou; in 1963 it returned to Hradec Králové and used two wings of the bishop’s residence on Velké náměstí. It gained its permanent seat and its present name in January 1990, when it moved into the former building of the Záložní úvěrní ústav (savings and loan institution).

The late Art Nouveau building was built in 1911–1912 to a design by Osvald Polívka. The bronze sculptures by Ladislav Šaloun that flank the main portal date from 1908. In 2014 to 2016 the building underwent a complete reconstruction: visitor services are on the ground floor, the Galerie Vladimíra Preclíka is on the first floor, the permanent exhibitions occupy the second and third floors, and the fourth floor houses short-term exhibitions and a terrace.

The collections trace the development of Czech modern art from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries to the present and comprise more than 9,000 items. The gallery also manages the collection of the Galerie Vladimíra Preclíka, the sculptural cycle Křížová cesta 21. století in the open air near Kuks, and, since 2019, a collection of moving images and a collection of Central and Eastern European art.
