About the museum
Until 2022 the gallery was called the East Bohemian Gallery in Pardubice; it bears the name of the architect Josef Gočár (1880–1945). It is housed in the Winternitz Automatic Mills, an important monument of industrial architecture that Gočár designed in 1910–1911 and modified after a fire in 1919. The mill ceased operation in 2012, was declared a national cultural monument in 2014, and in 2018 it was bought by the Pardubice Region.
Conversion of the mill into a gallery, designed by the TRANSAT ARCHITEKTI studio, began in May 2020. In mid-2023 the gallery moved from the château into the mills. Visitor operations are concentrated in the five-storey mill building, with original wooden ceilings and a steel frame. Inside the building and in the courtyard, original technical features of the mill have been preserved, such as the drive shaft, the pump and the spiral chute.
The second exhibition building is the Renaissance Dům U Jonáše on Pernštýnské náměstí, with a sculptural stucco façade telling the story of the prophet Jonah, which the gallery has used since 2000. The gallery's collection includes more than 19 thousand paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and photographs, which are presented in permanent and temporary exhibitions.
