About the museum
The Chrudim museum was founded in 1892 as the Industrial Museum for Eastern Bohemia, building on the collections of the Museum Society founded in 1865. It was meant to help craftsmen and tradespeople, so its collections also included pattern books, templates and objects that served as inspiration for making useful articles. The town had a complex of buildings constructed for the museum to a design by Prague architect Jan Vejrych: the neo-Renaissance part in 1897–1898 and the neo-Baroque part in 1898–1901.
In 1920 the Local History Museum for Eastern Bohemia was established in the same building and shared management with the industrial museum. After the Second World War the two institutions merged, and after 1948 the collection area was narrowed to the Chrudim district. Today the museum is run by the Pardubice Region. It manages over 140 thousand collection items from the fields of regional history, natural sciences and applied art, as well as a specialist library.
Of particular value is a set of 42 lithographs by Alphonse Mucha, which the museum acquired after successful exhibitions in 1897 and 1898. The collections also include posters from the economic and industrial exhibitions in Vyškov and Hořice. The newly conceived exhibition Euforie ornamentu, opened in spring 2026, presents Mucha's posters in a calm space where visitors can pause and return to individual works.
