About the museum
The Geophysical Museum in Skalná is run by the Geophysical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The exhibition focuses on earthquakes in western Bohemia, the area where so-called earthquake swarms regularly occur – series of many weaker tremors in a short time. The town of Skalná lies right in the centre of this area, and the institute has been researching these swarms since 1962.
The museum explains how earthquakes are monitored and measured and introduces visitors to the basics of plate tectonics. To record the tremors the institute uses the regional seismic network WEBNET, which consists of 25 stations in the Karlovy Vary Region.
A small lecture hall for about 15 people shows a thirty-minute documentary film about earthquake swarms. On request the visit can be supplemented with a tour of the medieval adit beneath Vildštejn Castle, where the Skalná seismic station is located.
